Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this only for Eritreans?
    We started this programme initially to connect the Diaspora with their country however all are able to apply. Kindness and professionalism knows no race, and so we welcome all!
  • Do I need to have an Eritrean ID/Passport to come?
    In order to come to Eritrea, you will need either an Eritrean ID or a Visa from the local embassy of the country you reside in. If you are successful in being accepted onto the volunteering scheme, we will help facilitate getting your travel documents.
  • How often will new projects be uploaded?
    We are in constant communication with the different ministries in the country and will be uploading projects regularly.
  • Do I need a qualification to take part?
    This all depends on which project you are volunteering for. If the project you are volunteering for is in a hospital for example; then you will need to have a medical background, in order to volunteer there. If you’re volunteering for the Saturday reading class, reading to kids, then you will just need to be able to speak English.
  • Is there an age limit on volunteers?
    At the moment we are not accepting any volunteers under the age of 18 years old.
  • How long are the projects?
    Project durations are based on the specific project you have requested to volunteer for. If a school requires an assistant teacher for a period of 3 weeks then the volunteering scheme will last for 3 weeks and if 3 months, then it will be 3 months. Please read the details on the projects page to see how long each project will be.
  • Where will I be based?
    Please see the location details assigned to each project in order to better understand where you would be based. Currently a large number of our projects are based in Asmara however as we travel around the cities more, we will be expanding our locations.
  • Is accommodation provided?
    Accommodation is not provided, however we will try and help you find a suitable place to stay.
  • Do we get paid?
    In most cases, volunteers will not be paid as it is a volunteering program. There are however a number of roles that depending on length of stay, will provide a stipend - I.e. Lecturer or doctor spending 6 months - 1 Year.
  • I’d like to work on another project in Eritrea, but it’s not one that has already been identified on the website. Is this possible?"
    If there is another type of project you’d like to work on in Eritrea, and we haven’t got it in our list, please feel free to email us at info@erisdra.com and we will see if it’s something we can help organise. If we’re not able to, we can try and put you in contact with others.
  • Are you a registered organisation?
    Yes, we are a registered charity in the UK. Our ID is..... We are also registered in Eritrea which allows us to work on these projects throughout the country.
  • Is Sdra a governmental organisation?
    No, we are a non-governmental organisation however we do work with the government on projects supporting their National Development Plan as well as projects we have identified.
  • How can we support the work you are doing?
    There are a number of ways in which you can help support us as an organisation. Please read the ‘Support Us’ section for more details.
  • I am going to Eritrea on holiday and I would like to get involved in something if I can. I don’t have the time to volunteer full time. Are there any opportunities for this?
    Absolutely, we understand that there are school, work and family commitments and not everyone will have the flexibility to come over for a long period of time and volunteer. We have created some opportunities for you to volunteer too. Please take a look at the Volunteering section and browse through the opportunities. Durations, will be listed and will include projects that can be done even for those that are travelling for holidays.
  • I have some items that I would like to donate to Sdra. How can this be done?
    Although we are grateful to receive anything, we have specific needs so if you take a look at the list of items we need and try and stick to those. We will be doing collections in a number of different countries throughout the year and will send those items via cargo.
